Sub-.500 bowl waiver is possibility
By Jack Carey USA TODAY 11/18/2010

With the college football season winding down and a record 70 bowl spots to be filled, the NCAA appears ready to allow teams with losing records to play in the postseason if the necessity arises. The hope is, it won’t.

The NCAA’s football postseason licensing subcommittee, which is chaired by Big East Conference associate commissioner Nick Carparelli, is tracking the issue. But there are no plans to cancel   any bowls, Carparelli said, if fewer than 70 teams reach the mandatory six victories (or seven if a team beats two Football Championship Subdivision schools).

“No final decisions have been made, but the subcommittee remains committed to having all the bowls played,” Carparelli said.
If fewer than 70 teams are eligible when the regular season ends Dec. 4, the subcommittee probably will look at fast-tracking a waiver to the six-win rule.
“Of course, you never want to break new ground if it’s not   necessary,” Carparelli said.

With three weeks left in the regular season (although most teams have fewer games than that to play), 54 clubs are bowl-eligible. Another 39 are in contention to become eligible. Fourteen of those could be eligible with wins this weekend.
Last year, there were 71 bowl-eligible teams for 68 slots at the end of the season. One more bowl is on the schedule this year.  Carparelli said the number of teams eligible is down slightly from corresponding times in recent seasons, although there are more teams than usual this year that have not already been eliminated.

That leads him to think that enough clubs ultimately will become eligible and a waiver will not be necessary.
“I’m an optimist, and I think we’ll get to 70,” he said.

THE ANSWER? A good bowl/playoff system.

GO BROWNS, TRIBE, BUCKEYES, CAVS, YSU, and yes I like ND plus GO NAVY, beat Army!!

It's so hard to go undefeated, only one major D-1A team has ever gone 14-0 in the history of the college football and win the NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP.

THE ANSWER? A good bowl/playoff system, it can be done. A few early round bowl games will be exciting over .500 teams.....and BIG moneymakers, isn't that the real objective in NCAA sports? Make money for all your programs.

Of all the impending conference changes over this season, one would think there would be a playoff system in college football by now. I wonder why the committee isn't taking the chance...?

Yeah, I guess they'd rather see a 6-6 team in the Ho-hum Bowl rather than #8 OHIO ST vs #1 ?? in Round one of a sold out bowl, (any bowl).
