NCAA adding 2 more Bowl games............good lord.

I know this story was out a few weeks ago , but I still think it's worth chatting about again.

What gives here?? 

The St. Petersburg Bowl ( Big East / Conf. USA ) and the SEC gets a 9th Bowl tie-in to the PapaJohns.com Bowl in Alabama. Which makes two bowls in the same venue , the Cotton Bowl just got moved to another date.

We have entirely too many bowls games as it is, let alone a Bowl game for every household product known to man. You do not have to win your Conference to be Bowl eligable( which is a joke ).  But the NCAA has gotten itself so indulged in making money , and contracts with different Bowl represenatives...........it is way way beyond repair. They were surviving very well, before the flood gate of Bowls opend.  As were the Universities, as was the different sponsers and so on. They all just wanted more, more, more.............$$$$$$$.

Instead of adding Bowl games , they need to start eliminating some............seriously.  But that is not gonna happen. And by eliminating bougus, irrevelant Bowls you shorten the Bowl season, and you get right into the Big Daddy Bowls ( Rose, Orange, Sugar, Cotton, Alamo, Aloha, Citris ........etc ). Which in turn would eliminate some negativity at College footballs post season. Take it a step further,  And guess what ??........to all the playoff pundits, you could actually plan , script, and possibly make room for that to happen. Maybe by tying in the brackets with those Bowls I mentiond above.  I would only have have teams who have won thier respected Conferences in those Bowls as it would be............so why not factor in the Conference Champions , those Couple Big Daddy Bowls, tie-in a bracketed playoff that way. You then not only , legitimately finding  out what Conference was the best , but also who would be deserving of playing for the National Title. Single elimination........you lose the Bowl game , your out.

By doing something like this , I feel you ligitimize College football's Bowl season like it use to be.

The current NCAA D1-A football governing body are really a bunch of near-sighted fools.

Why don't they just do what most fans want, rework the current bowl system into, dare we say, PLAYOFFS?

Every other division does it and those players and fans love it!

Under the current system I say if the Bowl game is making money and selling tickets then keep it, if it is not and teams are playing in front of a half empty stadium then get rid of it.  It is a shame that college football has Bowls instead of a bracket but if that is how it is then I say the more the merrier, I'll watch every one of them.

I know guys that have played and are currently playing D-I Football.  They all had great times at their bowl games, big and small bowls.  It's a reward for having a good season or getting 6 wins.  It might not seem like much to the observers but for smaller schools that don't get on TV much it is their one opportunity to play on a National Stage.  When they go to the cities where they play those places roll out the red carpet for those teams.  Dinners, Tours, visit hospitals, see sites they have never seen before.  It's good for the Players and good for the Community.  There are a lot of Football players out there that grew up in a tough area, a place where they never left until they got their scholarship, now they get to play on National TV and go to Disney World.

Like I said I wish there was a Bracket, but since there isn't Bowl games are good for the players and the communities. I say there’s nothing wrong with that.

I can see your point to an extent. But , we have powerhouse D-1 schools making big Bowls without winning thier respected Conferences........then we have thier fan base knocking our Buckeyes for backing into the BCS title game ( cough , cough Georgia).  I know some of these kids a Bowl game is alot to thier College experiance, but when it gets down to the brass tax of everyone bitching a bout the current system...........it comes down to too many Bowls ( it does ) . I mean why do you think we wait a month and a half after the regular season to play the title game??  By shortening the College post season , you eliminate a couple things.........time off from playing your last game on your respected schedule, and you get right to the revelant bowls. Heck you would even find time to do a bracket type formula.

Well first the nearsighted NCAA brass has tabled any playoff talk until 2011-12.

So I guess we just add more bowls, a lot so empty the camera crews are told NOT to pan the "crowd" or should we say "seats".

Just imagine if one of these early bowls were a Round 1 game with a top 4, 8 even 12 team?  Most people would watch!! (rather than just wait until after Christmas)

Plus you can still have traditional more successful bowls stay "as is".

We are stuck with what we have...................I for one think the regular season is a playoff sort of speaking. every week in College football means something to somebody. You for the most part control your destiny, and yes there are factors like strength of schedule and so on..........but for the most part if you take care of your buiseness , you are rewarded. Time and time again there are folks who watch as fans and those who are on the media side who report this  great game that fail to point out the fualts of thier favorite teams is the reason thier not in the big game. It's true............I know it depends on who you lose to and when, but  for god sake win your Conference. Too many times folks are pointing out the negatives of others rather than thier own.  And I laugh histerically at those people, because they look ridiculous.

Good point and I totally agree with you, but the fact is they are not going to eliminate bowl games, it is ridiculous that teams have a month and a half off before the Championship game or big bowl game.  Teams that get hot at the right time cool off during that month, some time teams lose their rhythm.  It gives players time to recuperate and fill back in the line up.  To me that’s just not Football, but it is what it is, and I still love the game of college Football.

I see the benefits of the bowls.  I for one am hoping for some type of playoff.  There's no reason not to have at least a 4 team or 8 team playoff IMO.

Ironically it's the Big 10 and Pac 10 that are the biggest adversaires of a playoff and the SEC is the biggest advocate for one.  We'll never get a full scale playoff. 

I'd be happy with the top 4.  1 vs 4, 2 vs 3.  Seed them on the end season BCS rankings.  Give more points to conference winners.  Hopefully 3 of the 4 would be conference winners.  Have the first round games around Christmas and the Title game after New Years.

Keep the rest of the bowl setup as is.
