ESPN is reporting that Greg Oden will miss this years NBA season due to a knee injury.

Quote
PORTLAND, Ore. -- Celebrated Trail Blazers rookie center Greg Oden, the No. 1 pick in the NBA draft, will likely miss the 2007-2008 season after undergoing knee surgery Thursday, the team said.

Seven-footer Greg Oden will spend pretty much all of his first season in the NBA on the Trail Blazers' bench.

"Greg had an arthroscopy and a microfracture surgery today," team physician Dr. Don Roberts, who performed the surgery, said in a statement posted on the Trail Blazers' Web site. "He was found to have articular cartilage damage in his right knee. The area of injury was not large and we were able to treat it with microfracture, which stimulates the growth of cartilage.

"There are things about this that are positive for Greg. First of all, he is young. The area where the damage was is small and the rest of his knee looked normal. All those are good signs for a complete recovery from microfracture surgery."

The 7-foot center is expected to be on crutches for up to eight weeks. It likely will take 6 to 12 months for full recovery, the team said.

Just to bad.  Seems like Oden is struck with bad luck.  First his wrist, now his knee.

I first heard this on Mike & Mike this morning.

The way Golic described the surgery, it sounded like it was no sure thing he would even be able to come back after the surgery.  The Trailblazers PR release sounds a lot more positive in the prognosis - thank goodness.

Assuming he would have gotten the injury had he stayed in school, it certainly would have cost him millions.  He might have been forced to stay a 3rd year to comeback at the college level to prove to the NBA that his injury was OK.

It's just to bad.  I guess Oden is pretty upset and feels like he let the Blazers down.  He tested out in his physical at the draft so this injury accured sometime between then and a few days ago.  Oden says he doesn't know how or when he hurt it.

Oden is really a good kid and it's just unfortunate to see.
